Antique Samurai Armor – late Edo period

Japan Armor Society Tokubetsu Kichō Certified

The Third-Highest Certification Awarded by the Japanese Armor Research & Preservation Society

One of the most interesting features of this armor is its use of nerikawa, a specialized material employed in traditional Japanese armor making.

Unlike ordinary tanned leather, nerikawa was produced from untanned animal hide, typically cattle hide, which was carefully hardened through traditional processing techniques. These could include heating the rawhide over fire, soaking it in a diluted solution of animal glue (nikawa), and repeatedly compressing and compacting it with a wooden mallet.

This labor-intensive process produced a dense, rigid material suitable for the protective components of samurai armor.

The hardened rawhide was then covered with black wrinkled leather, creating the distinctive textured surface described in the armor's Japanese designation.

The armor features Okegawa style Nerikawa cuirass, helmet and its header decoration finished with golden leaves.

An Authentic Example of Edo-Period Armor Craftsmanship

This suit represents the sophisticated use of both metal and specially processed leather in traditional Japanese armor construction.

Its hardened rawhide components, textured black leather covering, and classical Okegawa-dō construction make it an appealing historical piece for collectors interested in the materials, techniques, and aesthetics of Japanese samurai armor.

The armor is accompanied by examination documentation from the Japan Armor and Arms Research and Preservation Society (Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozon Kai).

Please don't hesitate to request additional photos or videos before purchasing this armor.

This suit of armor also features a Momonari, or peach-shaped Kabuto Helmet Bowl Covered in Black Wrinkled Hardened Leather with a beaten gold header board.

This armor comes with a 3rd highest Certificate of The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor - Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō
