Antique Katana sword in Ornate Mounting
Kogarasu-Maru
NBTHK Hozon certificated (Well Preserved certificate)
Swordsmith: Attribute to Kusano Yoshiaki
A very rare and quality Katana sword from SAMURAI STORE Tokyo.
Kogarasu Maru is the name of a unique Tachi-style sword handed down to the Taira clan, made between the late Nara period and the mid-Heian period(8th-9th century). It was named after a legend that it was brought there by a giant three-legged crow, a messenger from Omikami Shrine.
About KOGARASU Maru
The Kogarasumaru is made in a style called "double-edged blade construction," a unique technique featuring a double-edged blade. This was invented for both purposes during the transitional period from the end of the Nara period to the middle of the Heian period, when straight swords were primarily used for stabbing, and curved swords for cutting. As the Kogarasumaru is a representative example of this construction, it is also called Kogarasu-Tsukuri (Kogarasu design)
In addition to the Kogarasumaru, several other double-edged swords still exist, made as copies by swordsmiths of various eras. They are extremely valuable as historical documents and are rare and sought after.
Swordsmith Kusano Yoshiaki made this Kogarasu Maru blade at the end of the Edo period, and it was Hozon-certified by NBTHK, the Japan Sword Society. The Tachi-style ornate mounting is also from the Edo period, around the same time as the sword.
The blade has a beautiful Notare swell tempered pattern with a Choji clover pattern—a unique glove on the blade.
He didn’t add any inscription to the tang, and, under NBTHK regulations, any Edo-period blades without an inscription can’t be granted Tokubetsu hozon paper, regardless of their quality or condition. This super stunning blade has only the Hozon paper certificate, not the Tokubetsu paper. So we must say this blade has the highest certificate that a non-inscription Edo-period sword can get from NBTHK.
This blade has Hozon paper certification as a "Well-Preserved Sword" from the NBTHK (Japan Sword Preservation Society), highlighting its enduring beauty and historical value.
The blade also comes with a Magnolia wooden holder for Shirasaya storage. We are happy to offer you a free maintenance kit that helps you switch the blade between Shirasaya and Koshirae ornate mounting, along with an English instruction book on how to care for a Katana.
The blade comes with a Certificate of NBTHK Japan Sword Preservation Society - Hozon Paper (Well-preserved sword)
